How many people do you know who can say they started running marathons in their 40s? Dr. Jeffrey Scruggs is an avid runner who trains & competes in triathlons, marathons, and cycling in his spare time. He is also a dentist, business owner, husband and father of four. Dr. Scruggs dreamed of opening his own private practice in his native state of Louisiana. Just like completing a marathon, Dr. Scruggs is proof that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to, and today he is the owner of Scruggs Family Dentistry where he has been providing dentistry for over 20 years.
Dr. Scruggs’ daughter, Rae, is currently pursuing her dental degree at Dr. Scruggs’ alma mater, LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. When his daughter began dental school, Dr. Scruggs began planning for the future of both of their careers. He wanted to be able to hire his daughter as an associate at his practice to provide her with mentorship in both dentistry and running the family business; however, he knew that bringing finances into the picture could complicate their relationship. It was this situation that inspired Dr. Scruggs to explore options for the future of his practice.
“I met with MB2 and I loved them right away,” remembers Dr. Scruggs, “They were absolutely, exponentially different than anyone else. I brought my daughter over [to the MB2 home office] and I was just really, really impressed with the different sort of practice model they had as compared to any other.”
Dr. Scruggs explored all options for his practice, but found himself continuously coming back to MB2 as the ideal solution for his practice. In partnering with MB2, Dr. Scruggs had the opportunity to continue practicing dentistry his way, knowing his team and his daughter’s future career would be secure. He’d be able to hire and mentor his daughter, all while offloading the stressors of the business needs of his practice.
“I have a weight off my shoulders, off my chest, physically I feel that lighter,” said Dr. Scruggs, “When I did my last patient I knew that it was over, and I was done being a solo practitioner responsible for every little minutia of this practice and I literally felt a weight lifted. I actually ran further than I’ve run in six months. I don’t know, it’s like I’m no longer depressed. I’m psychologically uplifted. Everything’s been going unbelievably beautiful. These guys really know what they’re doing”
