What other dental groups did you consider for partnership before deciding to join MB2 Dental?
Joining a dental group wasn’t even on our radar until we spoke with MB2 Dental.
My partner, Dr. Greg Sabol, and I have been working together for more than 12 years and are very proud of the brand we have built and our reputation in the community. We had no interest in giving up control of our practice but were also always looking for ways to grow.
Dr. Brad Britton, an MB2 doctor partner we have an existing relationship with, shared his positive experience, which really resonated with us. Speaking with other MB2 partners and meeting with MB2 in Dallas just solidified our decision—everything aligned with what we valued for our practice’s growth and autonomy.
What ultimately led you to take the leap and partner with MB2 Dental?
One of the most important things in deciding to partner with MB2 was maintaining autonomy. We’re very happy with what we built. We love our team and the way we do things and weren’t interested in that being interrupted. But on the other side, the team at MB2 has astounded us in the things they can help us with, and the resources provided.
We’re loving every minute of our partnership thus far and we’re excited to fully immerse ourselves in the community and begin some growth, continuing with the successful brand that we have.
As a specialist, referrals are incredibly important. How does the community aspect of MB2 impact your practice?
It’s a game-changer. We’ve already had solid relationships with some MB2 doctors and are excited to expand that within the larger MB2 network. MB2’s frequent events are great for fostering this community, and we’re looking forward to networking with such a select group of doctors.
Our approach to referrals is that we are an extension of the practices that refer to us, so it’s extremely important that we maintain the level of care that coincides with each practice that we are referred patients from. We’re focused on providing the best possible patient experience, starting from reception all the way back to our surgical team.
MB2’s extensive referral network is a large draw for specialists. What other reasons made joining a multi-specialty group like MB2 Dental more attractive than a specialty-only group?
Besides the power of a large referral network, MB2’s community of practices is highly diversified, which makes the company’s stock more stable and predictable, regardless of the ebbs and flows of a particular specialty. I felt more confident that the multi-specialty nature of MB2 would help to reduce the risk of my investment in uncertain macroeconomic times. In addition, I liked that MB2 has more growth potential because it can attract both general dentists and specialists.
What was different about MB2 that made you consider partnering?
MB2’s model struck a chord with us—it’s the autonomy and the ownership aspect. We can maintain what we’re doing right, and for the areas where we need support or innovation, MB2 is there. That, and we were surprised to find out the average age of MB2 doctor partners (age 44) is much younger than we expected. This mirrors our sentiment: that partnering with MB2 isn’t a pre-retirement move but rather a pathway to growth.
Why did you choose to pursue a career in oral surgery?
Oral surgery has always been my calling, starting as a young adult from when I shadowed a mentor of mine in my hometown of Pittsburgh. It’s the diversity of the specialty that fascinates me—the range of procedures and the ability to make a tangible difference in patient care and comfort utilizing anesthesia.
What do you think it takes to be a successful oral surgeon?
Dedication and a patient-centric approach are key. Post-residency, it’s about building relationships, both with patients and referring practices, and ensuring top-tier patient care.
You must focus on making sure that you’re continuously maintaining great communication with your referrals and building your brand with your community. We’ve focused on making sure word of mouth and doctor referral patterns continue to grow based on our patient’s experience, and that’s been very successful for us.
U.S. News & World Report recently mentioned oral and maxillofacial surgeon as one of the “best jobs you’ve never heard of.” Why do you think oral surgery is a lesser-known field?
Oral surgery sits uniquely at the crossroads of medicine and dentistry, which might contribute to its lower profile. But for those of us in the field, this crossover is precisely what makes it an engaging and fulfilling specialty.
We treat patients and get referrals from the medical community and the dental community and the knowledge of oral maxillofacial surgery in the medical community varies depending on the region.
In the dental community, it’s my belief that an oral maxillofacial surgeon’s reputation is built on the quality of care they provide. If you excel in your practice, your name naturally becomes known among local dentists. Our specialized training equips us to enhance patient outcomes significantly, every dental practice we work with.
